for each inch cut,
the roots grow ten
where we can't see them.
i'm laying in the soil,
is it time for me to rise?
i've pulled up my stakes again.
is there someone who can take me in?

I stink like a dog right now. My room is an oven and I am sweaty and smelly. I'd change my
shirt or something, but in thirty minutes I'm leaving to see Pedro the Lion and I'm
sure a packed house at the El Rey would just undo any repairs I could make to
myself in the stench department.

The new Jay Farrar album is superb. You cannot go wrong with a No Depression album
featuring guest appearances by members of Superchunk and the Flaming Lips.
No way.

I wish Droo was around more often, just for the simple purpose of having someone
for me to repeatedly use the line "Shut up, honkey!" on.

I know now that all along I've been completely sane, and it's everyone around me that's
fucking crazy.

On my way home I beheld the most patriotic sight. I was stopped in traffic on Sunset near
Beverly Glen. I heard a siren. Then a firetruck with a giant American flag hoisted over
the cab came racing around the bend, followed by a swarm of foreign luxury cars and shiny
SUVs. It felt like the cavalry was coming to save the day. It was truly amazing.

I was watching TV with Cindy last night, and a commercial for a compilation called Easy
Rock came on. I am deathly afraid of "Easy" anything (especially Easy Jazz).
Anyways, I was telling Cindy, "What a scary compilation" and she agreed.
But as they played a bunch of song clips, we couldn't help but sing along to most of
them. I want that compilation.

It's starting to feel a lot like autumn here in Los Angeles. The temperatures are coming
down, and it's almost cool enough outside at night to necessitate wearing a jacket.

Is Cartoon Network's Adult Swim the funniest shit on television or what?
I'd write something more profound but my left eye is red and swollen up.

By the grace of God go I into the great unknown
Things are gonna change in our favor.
If we stumble, if we fall over the great unknown
Things are gonna change in our favor.

"The rational purpose of terrorism is to promote terror."
It's natural to be afraid. But we need to remember: from this point forward, the more
we live our lives in fear, the more we've let them win.

I talked to Aud today, who heard from Michelle. She's doing fine.
But I'm still waiting. I'm waiting for that email from her, the one that says
"It'll take more than jetliners falling from the sky and crumbling buildings to bring
me down."

I got out of bed for the second time today at 12:15pm and hoped that it was all a bad
dream, that I had imagined the whole thing, that when I turn on the TV again it will be
bad talk shows and A Wedding Story again.
Where's Superman when you need him; to fly around the earth and turn back time?
I hope that all of my friends and family on the East Coast are safe. Grandparents
please have stayed in Chinatown; Aunts, Uncles, Cousins please have
stayed on Long Island. Michelle please oh please don't have strayed out of the
Bronx this morning; Andrea and Brian I hope you kept away from the Pentagon; Katherine,
Heid, and Dr. Joe I'm glad you didn't plan on visiting us in Los Angeles
this week. I hope that everyone else that I never got to know very well while they were in
California are safe out in the East.
I'm not an exceptionally religious person, but today I realized that the words
"hope" and "pray" are synonymous.

The post below would probably make a lot more sense if I explain the setting: Me,
GirlShawn, BC, and Simone were in GirlShawn's office. Her cell phone rings. She answers
and has a conversation. Then the conversation ends and that's where the post begins...

GirlShawn: [on phone] Okay, I love you.
Me: [lovey-dovey voice] I love you!
GirlShawn: [hangs up] That was my mom.
